Our 10-day journey concludes with a stellar cast drawn from our growing family of Festival musicians who present a pair of uplifting Classical concertos plus exquisite chambers works by two of the Giants of Romantic opera.
Garfield Jackson was born in London and studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal Academy of Music, where his teachers included Peter Schilof and Stephen Shingles. He has been a member of the Endellion String Quartet since its inception in 1979. The ensemble is resident at Cambridge University and gives regular high-profile series in London, for the BBC and in major centres around the world.
As a soloist, Garfield has appeared at the Southbank Centre, the Barbican and Wigmore Hall. He gave the first BBC broadcast of Hummel’s Potpouri with the Ulster Orchestra and recordings include Rebecca Clarke’s Sonata for Viola and Piano with Martin Roscoe for ASV Records.
As a chamber musician he is much in demand and has performed with many great international artists, including members of the Amadeus Quartet, Sandor Vegh, Steven Isserlis, Andras Schiff and Joshua Bell. He has appeared at Wigmore Hall in well over 100 concerts. Garfield teaches viola at the Royal Academy of Music and in 2002 he was made a Fellow.
Sophie Mather is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, the RNCM and the University of Manchester. She graduated in 2007 with a First Class honours degree in Music from the University and gained an Upper Class GRNCM Diploma in 2008, studying with Richard Deakin. Whilst at the RNCM, Sophie gave a performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the RNCM Chamber Orchestra at the 2008 RNCM International Chamber Music Festival.
Sophie studied with Clio Gould at the Academy and was accepted onto the LSO String Experience Scheme for 2008/09 and also awarded a Leverhulme Orchestral Scholarship at the RAM for 2009/10. Sophie became a member of Manchester Camerata whilst still at the Academy and also plays with the Scottish Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, English Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Matt Palmer originates from the village of Tarleton near Preston. He began playing the Cornet in his local brass band at the age of 5 picking up the trumpet at the age of 10 when he began studies at the Junior RNCM for 8 years.
As a teenager Matt was a member of various National ensembles including the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the NYBBGB and NCOGB. In 2002 he won the International Trumpet Guild under 18s solo competition when its yearly conference was held at the RNCM. In 2009 Matt graduated from the RNCM, whilst there he won a number of Solo prizes including the 2008 Brass Solo prize and Stuart Roebuck prize for brass playing.
Since graduating he enjoys a freelance career as a trumpeter player and Teacher. He is a tutor for the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain and is head of brass at Sedbergh School. Matt regularly performs with the North West’s professional Orchestras and also performs recitals with his Brass quintet the Metropolitan Brass Ensemble.
